A Spring Mystery ……Solved!

A bit of gardening by David Oakes

DAVID OAKES -IMAGES.

Aquilegia, perhaps better known as Columbine was a wildflower that man has tamed to grace his garden.  We have various colours in our patch, Pink, Yellow and Cream.  But it is the Blue (with a Purple tinge) that is always the first to flower in our garden………

V1

The Blue, apart from being the first to flower, is also the variety that ‘self seeds’ and appears in the most unlikely of locations in the garden.  The Blue is also the variety that graces meadow and hedgerows in the wild.  So I guess that is the answer to our mystery…the wild variety is much tougher and needs to survive under its own steam, so no surprise that it is the first colour to flower and appears to be the only colour of Columbine to self seed. Don’t misunderstand, I am not complaining, as whatever their colour, I welcome their presence in the…

New Exciting Solar Plane Completes Second Cross-Country Flight in Texas

May 24, 2013 is a very exciting time and a staple for new inventors and engineers who have spent many years making solar transportation vehicles such as; long distance boats, airplanes and other types of transportation vehicles that can go great distances.

The first thoughts of solar transportation surprisingly enough dates all the way back to 1838 by Edmund Becquerel who experimented, observed and published findings about the nature of materials to turn light into energy, but were not pursued.

A solar airplane that inventors hoped to eventually pilot around the globe landed safely on Thursday in Texas, completing the second and longest  attempt to fly across the United States powered only by the sun.

The superbly designed experimental aircraft, named “Solar Impulse”, touched down at Dallas/Forth Worth International Airport shortly after 1 a.m. Central Standard Time, logged 18 hours and 21 minutes in the air to cover 823 nautical miles from Phoenix, Arizona.

The flight set a new world distance record in solar aviation.

Solar Impulse, which flies at 43 miles per hour (69 km per hour), began its cross-country sojourn on May 3 with an 18-hour-plus flight from northern California to Phoenix.

“Solar Impulse” made additional stops in St. Louis and Washington, D.C., having layovers at each destination waiting for favorable weather, the flight team plans to continue the plane’s voyage at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport in early July.

Swiss pilots Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg, the co-founders of the project, are taking turns flying the plane, which has a single-seat cockpit.

Piccard piloted the first leg from California to Arizona, and Borschberg flew the second stretch to Texas.

Solar Impulse Details By Green 400 Magazine

“This travel length was particularly challenging because of strong winds when landing, said pilot” Borschberg in a statement released after the flight. Andre has already held the record for the longest-duration flight in a solar-powered plane – 26 hours.

The Solar Impulse project began in 2003 with a 10-year budget of 90 million euros ($112 million) which involved engineers from Swiss escalator maker Schindler and research aid from Belgian chemicals group Solvay.

Solvay was one of the first investors that wanted to test new materials and technologies while also gaining brand recognition.
Project organizers say that the journey was also intended to increase worldwide support and recognition for the adoption of clean-energy technologies.

The wingspan of this miraculous jumbo jet, is surprisingly the same weight as a small car.
“The Solar Impulse” is just a test model for a more advanced aircraft the team plans to build to circumnavigate the globe in 2015. The plane made its first intercontinental flight, from Spain to Morocco, last June.

Solar Impulse Details By Green 400 Magazine

The aircraft runs on the same power as a motor scooter, propelled by energy collected from 12,000 solar cells built into the wings that simultaneously recharge batteries with a storage capacity equivalent to an electric car.

In that way, the Solar Impulse can fly after dark on solar energy generated during daylight hours. It is the first solar-powered aircraft capable of operating day and night without fuel to attempt a U.S. coast-to-coast flight.

Currently Solar Impulse is unlikely to set any speed record, nor is it unlikely to set any altitude record, but Solar Impulse can gradually climb to altitudes of 28,000 feet.

The current solar model was designed for flights of up to 24 hours, but the next model is in the works. and will have to allow for up to five days and five nights of flying by one pilot – a feat never yet accomplished.

Deep meditation and hypnosis therapies are apart of the pilots’ training to prepare them to fly for extremely long hours without sleep. There is no autopilot mechanism as of yet.

The plane’s four large batteries, attached to the bottom of the wings along with the aircraft’s four propellers, account for a quarter of its overall. The lightweight carbon fiber design and wingspan allow the plane to conserve energy, but also make it vulnerable to being tipped over. The next model should eliminate some of these inconveniences and hazardous interludes as the awkwardness of the balancing of the fiber design.

A ground team of weather specialists, air traffic controllers and engineers track the plane’s speed and battery levels and help the pilot steer clear of turbulence. Solar Impulse cannot fly in strong wind, fog, rain or clouds. Its machinery is not  designed to withstand moisture, but with any new invention, much tweaking will be need in order to find the missing links, to make a better, stronger and more durable plane that can withstand the elements of weather.

What in the Name of Peace is Going On?

What in the Name of Peace is Going On?
By Nicolya Christi – April, 2013

item 01a

Waking Up

The recent headline events to have unfolded in the US reveal a deeper sociological unease emerging in the wider public domain, fueled by an increasing lack of trust and growing suspicion in our governments, political institutions, government aligned media, military and police forces and a flawed global authority system which is revealing itself to be fundamentally corrupt – a system that deceives and attacks the very people it is supposed to protect and serve.

Social media networks and Internet sites abound with conspiracy theories (or facts, as may be the case) of the latest controversial inconsistencies in government/media accounts of so called “terrorist activities/attacks”, or ‘disasters’ and ‘tragedies’ such as the recent occurrences in Boston, West – Texas, Sandy Ridge, Connecticut, 9/11 New York and 7/7 London to name but a few, leading us to ask the question “What in the name of peace is going on?”

We are on the tipping point of waking up to the fact that a dysfunctional global authority system with a covert agenda is an unpalatable reality. An agenda that becomes evermore evident with each “terrorist” or “major community disaster” headline that unfolds. The recent events in the US beg the question just what is really going on?

Humanity continues to unconsciously and unquestionably collude with sanitized government controlled media accounts of such events, because the potential reality of what is really occurring behind the scenes is just too incredulous to believe.

We have traded our humanity and our autonomy for an anonymity that promises ‘safety’ in ignorance. However, we are slowly beginning to wipe the sleep from our eyes to recognize that such a trade off does not alleviate fear, but merely serves to suppress it and distract us from a less than altruistic government agenda

The Great Lie

Humanity is awakening to the fact that it is living under an illusion, that it is the victim of a Great Lie that has been spun by those in positions of great power today. Now, as we seek the truth of what is really going on we find ourselves called to publicly question and challenge those systems and people who weave the web that we are caught in.

We passively accept news coverage of so called ‘terrorist attacks’ and local community ‘tragedies/disasters’ as reported by the majority of colluding mainstream media, failing to recognize that these reports are riddled with flaws, contradictions, inaccuracies and inconsistencies, thus giving rise to a wave of conspiracy theories shared by those who refuse to passively collude.

A Wake Up Call

A wake up call is being heard across the world as a dawning realization slowly comes to awareness that we are supporting a system that continues to fail not only humanity, but also all life forms on Earth and the Earth itself.

It is fear that cautions people not to raise their heads above the parapet because they have little confidence or experience when it comes to empowering themselves in the face of what amounts to nothing less than an overwhelming, self serving and sinister agenda of those in control of our lives and future, both politically and economically.

We are living in unprecedented times that call for unprecedented measures. Never before has there been so much widely circulated evidence to expose the true agendas of those ‘in power’.

People are afraid to raise their voices and to become visible in protest. Instead they repress fear, anger, outrage and disbelief, along with a sense of powerlessness, complaining behind the safety of closed doors and then losing themselves in a consumerist culture cleverly established by those in power to distract and anesthetize the masses.

We are pawns in a carefully constructed culture established by visible governments, faceless multi-national conglomerates and non-visible power brokers with an invested interest in ensuring that their agenda is met, at all costs.

We are conditioned by a system that brainwashes us into believing that conspiracy is the stuff of fantasy and novels, of television and films, and to a certain degree this holds true. However, there is also a strong case for those intelligent conspiracy theories to be taken seriously as warnings and revelations as to what is really going on. We are led to believe that such carefully researched conspiracies belong in the domain of those deemed “sensationalist” or who are labeled “political reactionaries”, thus ensuring that their so called “unbalanced rants” continue to go unheard by the masses.

The time is upon us to deeply examine just what in the name of peace is really going on. To do so may amount to nothing less than our lives being irrevocably turned inside out and upside down, yet we need, we must, extricate ourselves from our passive collusion and wake up to the reality of what will unfold if we continue to bury our heads in the sand.

Human consciousness is evolving to a level that reminds us that violent protest, revolt and uprisings, in order to bring down a globally corrupt system, can and will fail. Gandhi taught us well; “An eye for an eye and the whole world is blind.”

We recognize that we can no longer react, yet must instead rise to the Evolutionary Call of the times that urges us to respond appropriately and speedily.

There have been countless protests and revolutions throughout the centuries. However few, if any, have resulted in lasting peace. We now find ourselves in a time of revelation unlike any other. How do we register our discontent and engage in conscious non-participation in a non-violent manner when going up against the might of established political and economical authorities, both nationally and internationally?

Let us make no mistake. We find ourselves facing what amounts to nothing less than a critical situation. In the name of peace we are called to engage in compassionate action and to publicly challenge a level of world dominance and control on such a scale as to pose a calamitous threat to humanity and the Earth.

Let’s tell it how it is – in the western world, and indeed the world over, nations are rapidly heading towards ‘police-military’ state control by government dictatorship whose sole agenda is to imprison the masses in a system that benefits the elite few, rather than the many.

Deep in our hearts we are aware of the fact that the only protest that will ever prove catalytic and effective for change is a globally unified campaign of non-participation that consciously challenges all and anything that stands as a threat to human rights, the rights of all sentient beings and the rights of the Earth.

We are in the Chaos Window and this is the moment of the rise or fall of humanity. We stand upon the threshold of the greatest opportunity – an opportunity that identifies that ultimately it is we who decide if humanity will rise or fall.

Standing together as a unified force in the name of peace and truth does not constitute or amount to revolution, nor does it label us as revolutionaries. This is the 21st Century with a degree of conscious evolution that marks us out less as revolutionaries and more as evolutionaries, with re-evolution towards a peaceful and sustainable world as a shared vision.

Evolutionaries we are and evolutionaries we must be if we are to literally save the world, not only for ourselves, but also for the generations to follow. Through peaceful, non-violent means we must let our courage be stronger than our fear if we are ever to effectively challenge and positively transform every level of society; political, social, economical and environmental.

The great and good of the past; Gandhi, Martin Luther King, John F Kennedy to name but a few, along with those great inspirations who are still among us; H.H The Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, Bishop Tutu, Thich Nhat Hanh, Aung San Suu Kyi and many, many more stand with us. These wise souls know that it is only through appropriate and peaceful action en-masse that we can begin to bring an end to all authoritarian regimes that left to their own devices will amount to nothing less than the ultimate take-over of humanity and all life on Earth. Paraphrasing the words of Noam Chomsky from a recent speech, ”Future historians, if there are any, would be searching for answers as to how the wealthiest of humanity at this time ran, not walked, the world into civilizational catastrophe with eyes wide open for what appeared to be the sole interests of their personal profits and gain, not even considering the fate of their own children and grandchildren.”

Evolve or Devolve – The Critical Juncture

Humanity has reached a critical juncture – we must evolve from a ‘for profit’ global consumerist matrix, or we will devolve into oblivion.

What stands between humanity and world peace is that too few of us are aligned and unified in ‘right action’. We must join together in peaceful yet uncompromising protest if we are to avoid a catastrophic outcome on an inconceivable scale that will be felt for millennia to come.

The impact of chemtrails, GMO, fracking, the fluoridation and privatization of water, the ban and criminalization of natural remedies, the pollution and destruction of the Earth regardless of the consequences because of the materialistic agendas of global conglomerates for ever increasing profits, and the imprisonment and marginalization of so many of those who dare to challenge political, economic and social agendas and policies and the reality of the abuse of the rights of humans, animals and the Earth, urge us to make a peaceful stand for a sustainable and beneficial outcome on every level for all of humanity and the Earth.

We need to wake up to the reality of what is really going on in terms of covert agendas and false flag operations, and the fact that the real terrorists are the very people that we are voting into the highest echelons of power along with those who remain unseen who pull the strings behind them. We vote in ignorance and are complacent in our capacity to act responsibly and more fully inform ourselves of the facts and behind the scenes reality before we sign away our rights, along with those of the Earth.

Gandhi revealed a way when he inspired millions across the vast country that was India to unite in peaceful and non-violent protest against the might of the British Empire. Millions of people united in sustained peaceful, non-participation in protest of a corrupt system is the worst fear of those in power.

What We Can Immediately Begin To Do

Resist consumerism. Refuse to buy or eat anything other than organic and non-GMO. Sign petitions to stop chemtrails. Support organizations such as Avaaz.org. Snap out of a (false) sense of security regarding ‘homeland security’. Extricate yourself from the web of delusion that is spun by those who impose and maintain a dysfunctional system to benefit the few, rather than the many.

Inform yourself by researching and reading what are often deemed to be conspiracy theories, yet are more often conspiracy facts. Discernment is important so check and follow associated links and read comments in relation to posts and information wherever you encounter such. Read the same stories from many different and respected sources and perspectives until you are able to distil the most likely truth.

Connect with those in your community of like heart and like mind. Begin to involve yourself actively with causes, campaigns and any activity that resonates with your commitment to support the manifestation of a peaceful and sustainable world. Remember, one seemingly small and independent action when combined with millions of others becomes one giant act by and for the Collective. Commit to supporting and getting involved with on-line and local ‘better world initiatives’ such as Change.org, Oxfam, Greenpeace, MedMob, Survival International, Occupy, etc.

Be mindful of your regular shopping purchases and trace them back to their source and be interested in just what processes were involved to bring these to your table. There are infinite actions you can take to begin to empower yourself to no longer participate in a dysfunctional system with a distorted agenda. As Bob Marley sang, “Get up, stand up. Stand up for your rights”. It is time to wake up.

You Choose

Ervin Laszlo wrote; “It has been said that our generation is the first in history that can decide whether it’s the last in history. We need to add that our generation is also the first in history that can decide whether it will be the first generation of a new phase in history. We have reached a watershed in our social and cultural evolution.”

Until we withdraw from consumerism, materialism and escapism and instead, unify in peace, human by human, village by village, town by town, city by city and nation by nation, we will continue to condemn our lives, the lives of our children and our children’s children to a cancerous future perpetuated by global authoritarian systems that will consume and destroy the very heart of the individual, Nature, humanity and the Earth.

Unified synchronistic peaceful resistance, compassionate action and non participation are the only way forward if we are to save ourselves, humanity and the Earth from the jaws of a global monster that will consume us whole.

Use any and all non-violent means to resist anything that is an affront to personal and world peace. We must stand together, side by side, in peaceful protest and non-participation.

We can no longer leave the legacy of a peaceful world for generations to come to ‘world leaders’. The reality is that our ‘leaders’ have no interest in creating a sustainable and peaceful world.

Gandhi’s lasting legacy and greatest gift to humanity was and is ‘Passive Resistance’. He proved the power of unifying en-masse in peaceful protest.

This is the only way now.

We are almost out of time.

California #1 in Renewable Energies

We are in the middle of an energy revolution and it is exciting to see who reforms to the new idea’s of renewable energies such as solar…
Lancaster California has been working on becoming the #1 city in the world to go solar, while Sebastopol California is catching up at a fast pace in becoming the second fastest city to go solar.
California along with Arizona have the highest rates of sunshine in the United States, both states average about 5.5 strong hours of continuous sunlight, so it would be to the advantage of these states to cash in with solar to make their states more energy efficient and to give other states the initiative to do the same.

Sebastopol, California, making solar power manditory on all new construction...By Green 400 Magazine

The Important Question is Why Do We Need Solar?
There 5 different area’s that we will focus on:

1) Economic growth- The high usage of electricity over the past several decades has grown drastically from all of the devices we have been inventing over these time periods such as the internet, computers and computer related products that have a huge appetite when it comes to energy usages.
As the United States continues to grow in their thirst for energy, we cannot continue down this path if we want to evolve safely.
The following chart is a 40 year chart of United States energy usage.

US historical energy consumption by Green 400 Magazine

2). Population Growth- Population growth is a given throughout the United States and California.
The expected growth for California from 2000 to 2040 is 51%.
The expected growth for the United States during the same time frame is estimated to be 42%.

3). Reliance on Imports- California’s energy demand increased 6% from 2001-2005, that was California’s last energy crisis.
A Silicone Valley Manufacturing Group is fearful that California State may need more energy then it can import. This same group that its nearly 200 members lost over 100 million dollars in just one day from the June 2000 blackouts. Transmission systems inability to import enough power was the cause of the rolling blackouts that occurred that year.
The chart below show the high need of imported energy.

california-pv-installs-soaring

4). Dirty Energy- Since 2006 California only consumes 11% renewable energies that include; solar, geothermal, small hydroelectric, biomass and wind, while 57 % is from dirty energy like fossil fuels, coal, natural gas and nuclear.
Recently a law pasted stating that California had to accelerate their renewable energies through private investor owned utilities and to receive a 20% renewable portfolio by 2010.

Fossil fuels create too much greenhouse gas pollution (e.g. coal). Fossil fuels and nuclear energy have health consequences and risks both for individuals and our environment. The Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change, comprising more than 2,000 of the world’s leading climate
scientists, have found that our global climate is gradually warming. They predict that during our
children’s lifetimes global warming could raise the planet’s average temperature by as much as 11
degrees Fahrenheit. Without acting upon this information, this landscape-altering disaster promises heavy damages on our ecosystems, economies and quality of life. Energy from non-renewable sources
become even more expensive over time due to finite supply. Renewable energy technologies
tend to become more affordable as supply and economies increase.

Solar Energy is just the ticket for clean and reliable energy, it can eliminate most of the states energy problems and is more affordable then the dirty energies of the present. Solar can also help eliminate California’s carbon foot print and reduce global warming. Best of all, once a solar system is
installed, it generates energy for free, requires minimal maintenance, and can last 35 years or more.

California for years has been a trend setter, lets just hope that this trend moves fast across the United
States, so that we can reduce our carbon footprint and be leaders in renewable energies..

Happy May Day Celebrations

The History and the Presence of May Day

To celebrate May Day comes from a tradition that stems back to 1561.
In medieval England, people would celebrate the start of spring by going out to the country or woods— they would call this celebration, “going a-Maying”—and gathering greenery and flowers, or “bringing in the May.” This was described in “The Court of Love” (often attributed to Chaucer, but not actually written by him).
The May Day poem back in the mid 1500’s went like this:

And furth goth all the Court, both most and lest,
To feche the floures fressh, and braunche and blome;
And namly, hawthorn brought both page and grome.
With fressh garlandes, partie blewe and whyte,
And thaim rejoysen in their greet delyt.

In today’s English setting:

And forth went all the court, both greatest and least smallest
To fetch the flowers fresh and branch and bloom
And namely, hawthorn brought both page and groom
With fresh garlands partly blue and white
And they rejoiced in their great delight.

May Day-  has more holidays than any other day of the year. It’s a celebration of Spring. It’s a day of political protests. It’s a neo-pagan festival, a saint’s feast day, and a day for organized labor. In many countries, it is a national holiday.

Beltane (Neo-Pagan-Irish Holiday)

Beltane was a Celtic (Irish) calendar feast bringing in the start of summer. (It also went by a variety of other spellings and names in assorted dialects of Gaelic.)
Gaelic (Irish language).

Bonfires, often created by rubbing sticks together, were common features of Beltane celebrations. Related rituals included driving cattle between two fires, dancing around the fires, and burning witches in effigy. Another tradition was Beltane cakes, which would be broken into several pieces, one of which was blackened. They would be drawn by celebrants at random; the person getting the unlucky blackened piece would face a mock execution.

In recent years, Beltaine has been adopted or revived by neopagan groups as a major seasonal festival.

Walpurgisnacht (German Holiday)

St. Wallgurga (or Walpurgis), the abbess of the monastery of Heidenheim, helped St Boniface bring Christianity to 8th Century Germany. She died on Feb. 25, 779.
Her remains have been moved on multiple occasions, several days have been designated in her honor, one of which is the first of May.

This date coincided with a pre-existing pagan festival, which, in Germany, included rites to protect one against witchcraft. This led to a hybrid legend developing, in which witches were said to meet with the Devil on the eve of May 1, on the Brocken peak. The night of April 30th became known as “Walpurgisnacht,” and the annual meeting was dramatized by Goethe in Faust.

Fertility Festivals

Some cultures, such as those found in India and Egypt, had spring fertility festivals. The Roman festival celebrating Flora, goddess of fertility, flowers, and spring, was celebrated from April 28 through May 3.

Bringing in the May

Another English tradition is the Maypole.(Maypole-a tall pole, decorated with flowers and ribbons, around which people dance or engage in sports during May Day celebrations).

maypole_logo

Some towns had permanent maypoles that would stay up all year; others put up a new one each May. In any event, the pole would be hung with greenery and ribbons, brightly painted, and otherwise decorated, and served as a central point for the festivities.

May Day was also a time for Morris Dancing and other dances, often around the Maypole. In the 19th century, people began to braid the maypole with ribbons by weaving in and out in the course of a dance. Other later traditions include making garlands for children and the crowning of the May Queen.
Morris Dancing is a rustic dance of the north of England that had its origin in country festivals, such as those of May Day and Whitsunday. Reference to it in English literature is made as early as the 15th century. The main dancers were called Robin Hood, Maid Marian, the hobbyhorse, and the bavian, or fool. They were accompanied by a piper or (taborer). An ambulatory dance was often performed from one village to another by the main dancers and six other dancers, three in a row. The Morris dance was a sword dance in many vicinities. The History of Morris Dancing, 1458–1750.

morris_dance by green 400 magazine

May Day soon became Labor Day in the United States and many other countries.
This origination with the United States became a labor movement in the late 19th Century. On May 1, 1886, unions across the country went on strike, demanding that the standard workday be shortened to eight hours. The organizers of these strikes included socialists, anarchists, and others in organized labor movements. Rioting in Chicago’s Haymarket Square on May 4th including a bomb thrown by an anarchist led to the deaths of a dozen people (including several police officers) and the injury of over 100 more.

May Day And Occupy Movement By Green 400 Magazine 2013

The protests were not immediately successful, but they proved effective down the line, as eight-hour work days eventually did become the norm. Labor leaders, socialists, and anarchists around the world took the American strikes and their fallout as a rallying point, choosing May Day as a day for demonstrations, parades, and speeches. It was a major state holiday in the Soviet Union and other communist countries.

Labor Day is still celebrated on May 1 in countries around the world, and it is still often a day for protests and rallies. In recent years, these have often been targeted against globalization.

So what started out as a simple but yet beautiful holiday some 2000 years ago, has turned into a day of protests and became apart of the political arena in recent years.
Although it seems like the United States has undermined this holiday of flowers, spring and beauty, we can still look beyond the political strife and find May Day as a day of new beginnings as we hear the birds sing and watch the environment come alive again after a sleeping wintry slumber.

Tao Today: A Sage’s Take on Modern Society, Part 2

Interesting take on past and social growths and failures.

Ekostories

In response to the predicament of his times, Lao Tzu ruminated on the essence of human nature and asked: What can be done to stop the injustice, violence, and greed that inevitably corrupts the core of civilization? According to Welch, the old sage came to the conclusion that a radical operation must be performed on human nature before these systemic issues could be resolved:

“First he cuts out desire for superfluous material goods (they only keep their owner awake at night), then desire for praise and fear of blame (both drive men mad), then desire for power (the only successful ruler is one who suffers as his kingdom suffers). But this is not enough. Morality is frequently used to justify violence. Morality must go. Violence frequently starts with a fixed difference of opinion. Fixed opinion must go. But without desire, morality, and opinion, what is left for a man…
